US (AZ): Local farmers oppose Monsanto's Tucson greenhouse plans

Biotech giant Monsanto purchased 155 acres of land in the Avra Valley in September with plans to produce corn and soy in a seven-acre greenhouse.

Some local farmers and activists are not excited about the company’s presence in southern Arizona.

Anne Loftfield is part of a campaign to stop the corporation from coming to Tucson. She said she is concerned that the county will give Monsanto a huge tax break.

A Monsanto spokesperson said there should not be any concern about the spreading of pesticides because the Avra Valley operation is completely under glass.

Still, Loftfield said Tucson has built a culture of natural and organic food. She is concerned Monsanto’s presence will change that.
