Poland: Greenhouse vegetable prices up, but still cheaper than last year

Despite the fact that wholesale greenhouse vegetable prices have increased, these are still cheaper than last year. Meanwhile, the price of other national vegetables and fruits has also dropped, reports the spokesperson of the wholesale market in Bronisze, Małgorzata Skoczewska.

Green beans, courgette, broccoli and aubergine are about 25% cheaper compared to prices in 2015, with cauliflower and peppers in a similar situation.

For their part, carrots, parsley, onion or potatoes are sold for half the price of a year ago. Parsley roots in the wholesale market of Bronisze cost between 1.30 and 2 złoty* per kilo. Carrots can be purchased at a price of 0.40 to 0.60 złoty per kilo, while a year ago they reached 1 to 1.30 złoty per kilo. For onions, you must now pay 0.30 to 0.45 złoty per kilo, while a year ago, the price ranged from 0.90 to 1.30 złoty.

Due to the smaller supply of most greenhouse vegetables, including aubergines, courgettes and broccoli, most of the supply on the domestic market consists of imported vegetables.

The prices of vegetables imported from abroad are slightly higher than those grown domestically or are at a very similar level. Domestic aubergines cost up to 4.50 złoty/kg, while imported ones reach 6.30 złoty/kg. Domestic broccoli stands at 2.50 złoty, while imports cost 2.30 złoty/kg. Domestic courgettes have a wholesale price of 6 złoty, while imported ones cost 5.30 złoty.

The most noticeable difference is in the price of cucumbers, as domestic ones stand at 7 złoty per kg, while the imported product is 1.5 złoty cheaper. Also, potatoes are very cheap, with even the highest quality not exceeding a price of 0.40 złoty per kilo, which is about 50% less than last year.
