US (PA): Interboro lab hits growth spurt with $100,000 grant

Even before Interboro won its homecoming game against Chester on Oct. 7, the school scored big from State Farm Insurance with a pre-game check presentation for approximately $100,000.

State Farm agent Vicki Neill gave district leaders their check for being one of 63 recipients of the insurance company’s 2016 State Farm Youth Advisory Board Service-Learning grant for the high school’s aquaponics lab.

Still in its infancy to produce organic tilapia, herbs and vegetables, the money is a boost to the self-funded service of tech education teachers Tom Speer and Joe Fisher to give food to the community.

Housed in a classroom on the school’s first floor, the non-stop operation includes an entire wall of fish tanks for the tilapia to grow, and two systems that double as housing tanks for bigger fish on the bottom and verdant vegetation on top.

The money will help them double the systems they have and then some.
