US (CA): Pam Marrone's war on weeds

To keep fit, when she’s at the Davis home Pam Marrone shares with her husband of 39 years, Michael “Mick” Rogers, she swims for 45 minutes in her solar-heated pool and takes her dogs on two-mile walks and runs during the week.

It’s not just to combat the effects of the constant world travel she does on behalf of her company, Marrone Bio Innovations Inc.; it’s also because she needs all of her strength to wage war on weeds.

“I won’t rest until we solve the problem of weed control,” she says over lunch. “It represents the highest cost of organic crop production.

“So here’s the vision,” she continues. “Most of agricultural products are treated with chemicals, and then some biologicals are dialed in. Why not reverse that? It would be safer and ultimately more cost-effective.”

Read the full interview, in which Pam Marrone also comments on the Bayer-Monsanto merger, at the Sacramento Business Journal.
