USC Aiken greenhouse opens new windows for research

The new greenhouse at USC Aiken will allow plant research to grow even stronger, and undergraduate students, in particular, will reap the benefits.

“Education these days is not just about learning things from a book. It’s students involved with their faculty in original investigations,” said Daren Timmons, dean of the College of Sciences and Engineering. “With this greenhouse, we’ll have an opportunity to do amazing research experiments that are long-term, and our students get to partner with their professors. The students will be right there, designing the experiments, collecting the data, writing up the reports, and presenting the results to a national audience.”

During the open house, Amanda Askins, a sophomore from West Columbia, showed off her research project, which involves Chinese wheat plants that have been cross-pollinated with other types of wheat plants for gene transposition.
