Where in the raspberry canopy does SWD lay eggs?

Michigan State University student Emilie Cole has been evaluating spotted wing drosophila's (SWD) preferred egg-laying location in the canopy of raspberry plantings under high tunnels. Data collected so far indicates that most SWD eggs are laid low in the canopy near the ground and the number of eggs laid declines further up in the canopy. This may have to do with SWD being highly susceptible to desiccation, so they prefer to stay lower in the canopy where there is more moisture.
