Australian greenhouse wasabi grower looking to expand

Publicly-listed agrifoods business TasFoods Limited is adding another boutique Tasmanian enterprise to its line-up — Shima Wasabi. TasFoods will acquire the wasabi producer, which sends premium, fresh wasabi to Australia's high end restaurants, for just under $3 million.

Shima Wasabi co-owner Stephen Welsh said he would stay on as general manager of the business, and hoped to see it grow.

"In the short term the next greenhouse that we're already starting to work on is about 1.5 times bigger than our current greenhouse," Mr Welsh said.

Mr Welsh said the increased production would go into some new markets, but would mostly help meet the increasing demand from current customers, including the top 60 restaurants in the country.
