Ukrainian greenhouse veg 50% cheaper than last season

This year the price of greenhouse vegetables on the domestic market in Ukraine has fallen by on average 50 percent. The main reason for this sharp drop in prices is the lack of demand from export markets.

The price of prickly cucumber for the year fell by almost half. At the moment, producers declare the prices for these products are between 10-13 UAH/kg. Sales of smooth cucumber in Ukraine today are between 6-7 UAH per kilogram, which is 65% cheaper than a year earlier.

Ukrainian farmers today sell tomatoes for between 20-25 UAH/kg, whereas a year ago the price of these products was on average 42% higher.

The relatively low price for cucumber is now mainly due to the lack of export demand for these products. Last year, Ukrainian farmers were actively shipping cucumbers to Russia and Belarus, which gave them the ability to charge higher prices on the domestic market.

The reduction in the price of tomato on the Ukrainian market is due to competition with cheaper imported products. Market participants say that today considerable amounts of tomatoes from Turkey are arriving on the market, which cost no more than 13-15 UAH/kg. A year ago, tomatoes were not imported to Ukraine, but due to the reduction in supply on local farms there was a shortage of these products in the country.
