US: Lettuce Dream adding two more greenhouses in Missouri

According to an article on newspressnow.com, two vegetable greenhouses will be built in Maryville, Missouri, this spring as a method of instructing those in the area with developmental and cognitive disabilities.

Lettuce Dream, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation formed to provide employment options for the individuals. It seeks to recreate a successful hydroponics operation established by a New Jersey initiative known as Arthur & Friends. In that effort, those with disabilities were actively involved in growing and marketing lettuce, spinach and herbs. Indiana and Wyoming are two other states involved promoting similar types of endeavors.

Planning for the project began about three years ago. Operations will start this summer.

Lettuce Dream proposed 3 initial building phases: The first phase was completed in Summer 2015, when funds were raised thanks to a supportive community in order to start the needed dirt work and planning of the greenhouses. The next phase will includes additional greenhouse. The third phase will include office space and a warehouse.

Grant writing and other fund-raisers have helped build a nest egg for Lettuce Dream. The Missouri Department of Economic Development approved $350,000 in tax credits through a Neighborhood Assistance Program.
