Climate-KIC nominated for Guardian awards

Kate Hofman, CEO of a Climate-KIC urban farming start-up, has been nominated as “Unsung Hero of the Year” in the 2016 Guardian Sustainable Business awards.

Voting is now open on the Guardian website.

The Guardian Sustainable Business Awards include both jury and reader awards and recognises businesses that are championing sustainability through innovation and impact.

GrowUp Urban Farms
Hofman set up GrowUp Urban Farms which uses aquaponics to produce fish, salads and herbs in unused city spaces to sell to restaurants and grocers. Her aim is to feed people in cities in an environmentally and socially positive way whilst also reconnecting them with where their food comes from and how it is produced.

This isn’t Hofman’s first appearance in the Guardian; earlier this year they ran a story on urban farming and interviewed Hofman about GrowUp. Alongside sustainable farming GrowUp also creates job roles specifically for young people with a history of poor educational attainment, training them as aquaponics technicians.

Climate-KIC also shortlisted
Climate-KIC itself has been shortlisted for two awards in the 2016 Guardian Sustainable Business Awards. The outcome for these awards will be determined by a professional jury.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be shortlisted for such a prestigious award alongside so many other high-impact organisations. This nomination is a well earned recognition of Climate-KIC’s fantastic community across Europe and around the world – they have put so much hard work into these projects,” said Angela Howarth, European Head of Communications at Climate-KIC.
