Jan Dortmans, Scherpenhuizen:

"Netherlands: "Revival of cucumber market after difficult start"

As a result of the darker weather the supply of cucumbers has reduced a little. The decreased sales prices in the stores, combined with the traditional Easter demand has caused a reaction with a revival of the cucumber prices. In the day to day trade the price of the 40 sorting is around 30 cents.

"At the moment the supply is smaller than the demand. This situation also gives a healthy support for after Easter. The price of the cucumber will be better in the week after Easter than this week," says Jan Dortmans of Scherpenhuizen. He is positive about the quality of the cucumbers. "The good weather over a week ago has benefited the colour and quality of the cucumbers."

The cucumber market could use the revival. "The start was very difficult," Jan reviews. "You can see that when Spain is still fully on the market and the Netherlands is early, there is more product available than the market can process. The Spanish product will continue to run for a while, but the Dutch retail has now switched. Only various German supermarkets are still carrying Spanish cucumbers."
