US (NH): Research underway to help grow spinach in winter
In winters, these framed shelters largely remain dormant across the state, waiting for early tomato plants to start growing.
But graduate student Kaitlyn Orde said the study now going on at the UNH farm is looking at the potential winter crop production of spinach in New Hampshire, and what varieties do best in the cold shelters.
Also, the study is looking at when to plant them to get the highest yield for price at market, often during the holidays.
Growers of local spinach in winter said they are getting between $10 and $12 a pound for the product at winter farmers' markets and they sell out quickly.
