NL: PhD position on Tsw-mediated resistance against Tomato spotted wilt virus

In light of a NWO-Green project, the WU-Laboratory of Virology is searching for suitable candidates for one PhD and one Post-doc position. The project aims to unravel Tsw-mediated resistance and the interplay with the innate immunity modulator NSs of tomato spotted wilt virus. In a concerted action, the PhD student and the post-doc
  1. Will clone the Tsw resistance gene from Capsicum chinense, identify potential new allelic variants and study its triggering and downstream signalling leading to a programmed cell death, and
  2. Establish a system to generate infectious TSWV (NSs mutant) particles from cloned cDNA.
These particles will be used to study TSWV biology and how this virus modulates innate immune responses during its replication in plants and the insect vector. Whilst the project involves a collaboration of both candidates to meet the objectives, the PhD student will have its main focus on the first objective and the post-doc on the second objective.

During the course of this project, the PhD-student and Post-doc will both additionally assist in BSc and/or MSc courses at Wageningen University in the field of Plant Pathology and Molecular Virology and supervise thesis students.
