US (NE): Sargent students learn about greenhouse food production

Though Sargent is located in an agricultural region, Sargent Public Schools Ag teacher Mike Kozeal learned recently that his students didn’t grasp the concept of where their food comes from.

So, he decided to take action and start a school greenhouse this year.

“Five years ago, I never would have dreamed of starting a greenhouse,” he said. “We built one from scratch. We have plants growing in it, and we’re taking produce to the hot lunch program just because kids need to know where their food comes from, and they need some awareness about the food they eat.”

Kozeal has been the ag teacher and FFA adviser at Sargent High School for 22 years and has a very active FFA chapter. He estimates that 75 percent to 80 percent of the high school student body takes an agriculture class or are members of FFA.

Kozeal said the greenhouse has been an eye-opening experience for both him and the students.
