Photo report: Large expansion for berry plant propagator Van der Avoird
Dutch berry propagation nursery Van der Avoird Trayplant has grown to an acreage of 35 hectares. The newest location of the company in Bavel was recently opened. Over the past year, two hectares of greenhouses, four cooling cells, office space and tray fields were constructed here.
Construction project
There was a lot to see at the opening of the new location: the tray fields (25,000 m2), the cultivation sites (58,000 m2), the warehouse (6,500 m2) with the new cooling cells and the new greenhouse (20,000 m2). The greenhouse was built by Van Amelsvoort Kassenbouw and consists of a hot and a cold area - for propagating and hardening off of the plants. The new location was built last year, put into service at the end of 2015 and the first plants have already been delivered. Planning specialist Ger Huijben: "It's all going a lot quicker."
15 million to 30 million
Van der Avoird propagates both raspberry and strawberry plants and supplies both plug plants and long canes - plants that are tall enough to produce immediately. About 15 million plants are delivered every year, but the ambitions are bigger. Huijben: "We would like to expand. More cooling cells and more greenhouse acreage. We hope to get started on this soon."
