Canada: Picking vegetables at the supermarket?

Canadian company Inno-3B now offers consumers the opportunity to pick their own vegetables directly from supermarket shelves. In March, live plants will be offered to customers in La Pocatière.

In the method devised by Inno-3B, vegetables are produced in a closed environment and then transported across a distance of 100 to 150 km. They are then placed in specially designed devices, using only light and no refrigeration, that keep the plants alive over a period of 3 to 4 weeks after delivery.

The consumer can then pick the produce (lettuce, coriander, mint, parsley or basil) from the store shelf. The company is working on expanding the system for other popular fine herbs as well.
