First urban fruit and veg garden on a roof in Dubai city centre
The company "Slow food Dubai", in partnership with "Times Hotels Management, has opened the first urban garden on the roof of a building in central Dubai, managed by a group of volunteers.
Seeds were planted in the garden for the first time at an event hosted by Slow food Dubai two years ago after the Food and Beverage Manager at the "Times Hotels Management", Bernard Vantuliy, expressed his wish to produce foods from sustainable local sources.
A partnership was consequently signed between "Slow food Dubai" and "Times Hotels Management" for the opening of this garden on the roof of the Time Oak Hotel & Suites in Tecom, Dubai, and decided to grow a range of fruits, vegetables and herbs meeting the international organic production standards.
The garden includes more than 50 species of plants and various vegetables, as well as birds and bees. There are 7 varieties of basil, two types of garlic and 9 types of lettuce, as well as pumpkins, potatoes, cucumbers, okra, aubergines, pomegranates, broccoli, radishes, lemons, dill, papayas, avocados, courgettes, beans and many other products.
