US (MI): Escanaba High School plans greenhouse for special needs students

A greenhouse project spearheaded by the special education department at Escanaba High School aims to foster a new level of hands-on learning for its students.

Using grant funds and money raised by the community, the department hopes to install an 8-foot by 12-foot greenhouse on its grounds by the beginning of the 2016-17 school year, according to special education teacher Jessica Garber.

"We had a meeting with all the special ed teachers and we talked about what our students need, and one of the things that we need is hands-on experiences," she said, noting the department has received a $1,000 grant that will be used on the project.

The goal is to raise $2,500 more, as the total cost for the structure is about $3,600.
