Dutch-Iranian universities collaborate on food safety
The RIKILT, a department of Wageningen University and the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Science in Teheran are going to cooperate on improving and monitoring food safety. How exactly the two universities plan to work together will be shaped in the coming months.
Iran exports various products to the EU such as pistachios and saffron. Now the boycott has been lifted, Iran wants to increase trade with the EU. It is important for Iran that they can meet with the standards applicable in the EU.
The institute for Food Safety RIKILT has many years of experience in training laboratories. The institute trains laboratories in more than 25 countries and is an attractive partner for countries who want to bring food safety to a higher level.
Iran is also going to collaborate with other departments of the Wageningen University. For example, Wageningen UR is helping Iran improve agricultural production. Wageningen UR also providing advice on starting a water institute.
Because of the Western sanctions, cooperation with Iran was low in recent years. But there have always been links between the Iranian government and the Wageningen University. Currently there are 35 Iranian PHD employees at the Wageningen University.
