US: Geothermal greenhouse technology coming to Southern Alberta
Ag Spectra Ltd. presented their ideas for a greener future to a crowd that included MD councillor Garry Marchuk and Town councillor Lorne Jackson a couple of weeks ago. This presentation clearly left a mark on Marchuk as he brought it up at the last MD Council Meeting on Jan. 12.
Lonnie Mesick is at the helm of Ag Spectra Whole Earth Science and Technology, a company with a vision for a unique type of greenhouse operation called Starfield Centre that utilizes geothermal technologies to produce locally grown produce to serve the communities it’s grown in.
Mesick hopes to see around 70 Starfield Centres across Southern Alberta, but the first one — the flagship — is being built in Magrath, otherwise known as the Garden City.
“We signed a [50-year] lease last August for about 39 acres of municipal reserve land,” Mesick, CEO of Ag Spectra Ltd., said. “We’re working with our engineering group now and hopefully within the next few weeks we can break ground for the first two, or three, greenhouses.”
