Taiwan: University grows hami melons in innovative facility

Using LED lamps and temperature control, a university in central Taiwan has been able to grow juicy and sweet hami melons -- eight times as many as a regular greenhouse can produce.

Da-Yeh University in Changhua County has spent years developing the technology to grow vegetables and fruit, including tomatoes and hami melons, in a plant factory set up by Department of Molecular Biotechnology, university officials said Jan. 6.

The university has been doing research on different vegetables and fruit and hopes to transfer its technology to farmers, said Wuu Dong-sing, the university's president.
