New Year's Revolution from Thompson & Morgan

After the Tomtato, here is the Egg & Chips plant

It may sound like an April-fool joke rather than a New Year's revolution but seed company Thompson & Morgan has launched an Egg & Chips plant to follow the success of its groundbreaking Tomtato.

While the Tomtato plant produces potatoes from the roots and tomatoes from the shoots, the Egg & Chips plant grows potatoes and eggplants - or aubergines as they are better known in Britain.

The dual-cropping plants have been initiated by Thompson & Morgan plant breeders after extensive grafting trials, conducted in close cooperation with Dutch breeder Beekenkamp Plants, and are being marketed as "space-saving" vegetables.

The new plant will also make it easier to grow aubergines in the UK climate, says T&M, because the vigorous potato plant can support the aubergines better than their own root systems can in British growing conditions.
