India: Aquaponics getting popular among urban organic farmers

To get rid of toxic vegetables, urban farmers are trying out yet another method of organic farming - aquaponics. The method, which was earlier used in large scale in farms, by blending aqua culture with hydroponics, is now being adopted in its miniature form to suit small residential houses.

"This system requires only the installation charge as the nutrients for plants will be produced by the fish," said T T Yoonus, president of Green Veg, a non-government organization working for the propagation of organic farming.

Hydroponic-method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, is also gaining popularity in urban areas. The method is adopted by families in apartment complexes.
