Former Monsanto Exec named Buenos Aires Ag Minister

Leonardo Sarquis, a former executive at Monsanto, has been appointed to the role of minister for agricultural affairs by the freshly elected governor of the province of Buenos Aires in Argentina, local media confirmed Tuesday.

Maria Eugenia Vidal won the post of governor during the first round of elections held last month in Argentina. Rumors had been circulating about the appointment of Sarquis to the post for weeks.

As the provincial minister for agricultural affairs, Sarquis will oversee agricultural production in Argentina's most populous province, which is also the agricultural center of the country.

Sarquis’ appointment to the role is already drawing criticism due to his past involvement with Monsanto, a U.S. agrochemical multinational widely considered to be one of the world’s most unethical companies for its practices in countries such as Argentina, Brazil and India.

Sarquis was the general manager of Monsanto's vegetable seed division for Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay from 2005 to 2007.
