US (MA): Freight Farms to grow local greens for Worcester State

Freight Farms, a company co-founded by a locally educated entrepreneur, grows food in shipping containers, and Worcester State University plans to start using lettuce grown in one of the company’s Leafy Green Machines in January.

Freight Farms, a Boston-based agriculture startup, says it is “on a mission to create a more sustainable and connected food system. The company provides the tools and services that enable fresh food production in any environment. Freight Farm’s flagship product, the LGM, is a complete hydroponic growing facility built entirely inside a shipping container, with environmental controls and indoor growing technology.”

Brad McNamara and Jonathan Friedman were fed up with how inefficient it was to grow produce in a rooftop greenhouse. Mr. Friedman decided it would be better to use a shipping container.
