Wisconsin second in U.S. with organic farms

Organic farming is alive and well in the state of Wisconsin, according to the newly released 2014 Organic Survey.

The survey is compiled by the USDA using data from the Ag Census. The report includes all known farm operators who produced organic crops and/or livestock as well as the acreage, production, and sales data for a variety of organic crops, as well as inventory and sales data for selected organic livestock commodities.

In addition, data for land in farms, participation in federal farm programs, and marketing practices on organic farms.

According to the report, Wisconsin is the state with the second highest number of organic farms, with 1,228 operations or 9 percent. The Badger state ranks only behind California, which has the lion's share of organic operations in the nation with 2,805 farms.
