Hungary: Considerable investments to develop agricultural sector
In the following months, several proposals will be put into motion to support improvements in the Hungarian fruit and vegetable sector. These will benefit not only individual producers, but also producer marketing organizations (POs) and producer groups, stated the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture last Friday.
Nagy István, of the Hungarian Fruit and Vegetable Interprofessional Organisation (FruitVeb) said the vegetable sector is a growing segment in the country and one of the largest generators of employment, thus playing a prominent role in supporting the rural population.
Some of the proposals include an investment of HUF 32 billion (102.83 million euros) to support technological development, prioritising renewable energy sources and geothermal energy. Other investments will be aimed at the prevention of adverse weather damage and the development of irrigation systems; also, in the first half of 2016, a budget of HUF 30 billion (96.4 million euros) will be allocated for the construction of glass and plastic greenhouses.
Competition will be fierce, but István believes that the Hungarian vegetables sector will have a a good chance to attract customers.
