The Phytosanitary Alert and Information Network (RAIF) of the Government of Andalusia has stressed the importance of keeping the greenhouse coverings in good repair in order to control pests.
The RAIF highlights that doing so is a mandatory requirement, and also that ventilation systems, bands, ridges and cracks should be sealed with mesh.
It is convenient to install double doors or doors and mesh (minimum 10 x 20 threads/cm²) at the entrances of the greenhouse, with a threshold of at least 4 m², placing sticky traps to prevent the entry of insects.
The RAIF recommends the use of meshes to seal the vent area with a minimum density of 10 x 20 threads/cm², except in cases when this would not allow for adequate ventilation of the protective structure.
It points out that it is compulsory to keep the greenhouse structure fully sealed to prevent the entry of insect vectors.
Non-compliance with any of these requirements can be very commonly lead to an increase in the appearance of pests such as whitefly, dirty tricholoma, heliothis and others.
