Crisis caused a change in consumer behavior

Russians stockpile produce and grow own vegetables

According to sociologists, during the economic crisis, most Russians significantly changed their behavior as consumers; Russians have begun to stockpile products and to grow vegetables in their gardens.

According to the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM), in the last six months 62% of Russians have switched to cheaper products. Also, during the economic instability in the country, 38% of respondents began to stock up on food for the future. Another 36% of respondents stated that they have started to grow more fruit and vegetables on their own land, and have subsequently been making preserves from their own harvests.

For more than six months, 37% of Russians have been depriving themselves of certain items, as well as spending on entertainment. On the other hand, 34% hold the opposite point of view, stating that, despite the difficult economic situation in the country, they are trying not to deny themselves anything. However, they are now looking for higher paid jobs or additional work. At the same time 24% have taken out a bank loan, 26% - a loan from friends, 23% - have borrowed money from relatives or close friends, 5% - have sold valuable property. It should be noted that the survey involved 1,600 people from 130 locations in Russia.
