Bulgaria: Greenhouse tomato prices 47% up
As reported by the Bulgarian State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets, the average trading price in September increased by 3.8 percent compared to August. The index, which reflects the wholesale prices of food products, stood at 1,344 points by the end of September.
As far as fruit and vegetables are concerned, greenhouse tomato prices increased by 47 percent, while open ground tomatoes became 27 percent more expensive. The price of cucumbers grown in the open increased by 20 percent, although the price of greenhouse cucumbers dropped by 20.5 percent. The price of green peppers and potatoes increased by 7 percent, while cabbage has became 34% more expensive.
Meanwhile, the price of peaches and watermelons rose by 25 percent in September, and apples and grapes registered a drop of between 7 and 12 percent.
Compared to a year earlier, potato prices have increased by 5.5 percent, red peppers by 2.4 percent, and green peppers and cabbage by 11 percent. For their part, apples and grapes are 9 and 8 percent cheaper, respectively.
Lastly, the price of watermelons has increased by 60% compared to last year, while bananas have become 9 percent cheaper and lemon prices have dropped by 4.5 percent.
