India: Farmers destroy heaps of tomatoes in drought-hit Shivpuri district

Farmers in Shivpuri district are dumping a huge quantity of tomatoes on fields everyday to rot, owing to poor returns. Drought in the district, known for mass production of tomatoes, led to lower quality yield. The price of this yield is so low that farmers in distress prefer to destroy it.

Huge quantities of tomatoes from this northern MP district are supplied to neighbouring Nepal, besides a large number of places across the country.

Shivpuri is one of the 19 districts of the state where the monsoon failed this year. The government has not yet declared it officially a drought-hit district.
