India: A wall against pesticide-laden veggies

Hundreds of students and farmers lined up on the arterial road from Palayam to Gandhi Park on Wednesday forming a ‘bio human wall’ with the aim of promoting organic farming.

The creation of bio-wall was taken up at the initiative of the Agriculture and Education departments as a precursor to the declaration of the capital as an ‘organic farming district.’ The participants held placards showcasing the importance of organic farming and the ill-effects of pesticides on human beings.

Agriculture Minister K.P. Mohanan said there had been an attitudinal shift among the people of the State towards farming following reports of high levels of pesticide residues in vegetables brought from other states. Of late, a large number of people have turned to organic farming, he said.
