“For year-round quality steaming is a must”
Coco peat and steam
In order to face the winter in a good way, it takes hard work in the autumn in radish cultivation. The whole garden is filled with a layer of 3 to 4 cm coco peat. "this is for the optimal structure of the soil," explains Grootscholten. Afterwards, the garden is steamed and the sheets are inflated for eight hours. "The whole company stands on its head," says Grootscholten. It is hard work and all in all it costs too much money. "But to grow intensively throughout the year and pursue quality, this really is a must. The radish grows in the ground, which for us is sacred. The costs precede revenues, we say."

Optimal growth
Treatment is necessary because the winter is a difficult period for radish cultivation. The growth is disappointing and it is difficult to keep the quality at a high level. "By steaming, we can accelerate the growth somewhat. We have more radishes for our customers." Also, for the quality of the radish this period is important. "The knife actually cuts both ways: Quality and production, which in turn delivers satisfied customers. So we start the winter without worrying too much."

Radish at a later stage, just before the harvest
The first harvest of the steamed soil has started. "The result is impressive. We and our staff are very happy."
