AU: NT watermelon supply strong despite challenges

The supply of watermelons from the Northern Territory has been fairly strong this year, despite the industry facing numerous challenges created by the discovery of a plant virus.

Norm Moses from the Sydney Markets, said he was worried the volume of NT watermelons would decline in 2015, but that has not been the case.

"A lot of the growers affected [by CGMMV] have moved to other plots of ground and continued farming which is good," he said.

"Supply has been good given the problems that's been happening up there and the quality has been really good too. So the year has been pretty good considering what I thought might happen and what did happen, this is almost a normal year for everyone involved."

Mr Moses said NT watermelons were starting to see some competition in the market as the season starts to ramp up in Queensland.

Prices remain good for quality fruit though, with premium seedless watermelons fetching up to $1.40 a kilogram.
