Poland: Greenhouse tomato consumption still unsatisfactory
Poland is a very important European producer of tomatoes; however, according to experts, promotions to boost consumption are still needed. The country's domestic production amounts to 712,000 tonnes, of which 80 percent goes to the Polish market, with the remaining 20 percent shipped overseas.
Every year, Poland's production of greenhouse tomatoes, which ensure greater stability and better yields, increases; unfortunately, consumption remains unsatisfactory, with a ratio of 9.98 kilos per person.
To correct this negative trend, the Association of Greenhouse Tomato and Cucumber Producers is planning to launch the programme "Tomatoes, naturally good." Its goal is to promote the consumption of tomatoes in both the Polish and German market and to raise consumer awareness about their nutritional value. The project is funded by the European Union and its budget will amount to 3 million Euro. Its implementation will start in 2016, after approval from the European Commission.
