US: Chicagoland is about to get a whole lot greener

In other news, last month Bright Farms broke ground on a 160K square-foot greenhouse farm in Chicagoland that, once completed in early 2016, will supply Mariano’s stores (of Roundy's Supermarkets Inc.) with 1+ million pounds of fresh, local produce per year! The groundbreaking event, held at the Rochelle, IL site, was a hit -- and Bright Farms got a lot of love from the media to boot. Why is the project significant?

• The Chicagoland greenhouse will use 80% less water, 90% less land and 95% less shipping fuel than conventional produce.
• It will be the most productive farm in the Chicagoland market, the most sustainable source of year-round baby greens and tomatoes in all of Illinois, and among the most productive salad greens farms, per square foot, in the world!
• It will create permanent green collar jobs, significantly reduce food miles, and improve the environmental impact of the food supply chain.
