"“Sales of flowers are good but Russians are more price conscious"

"According to the importers, the numbers of flowers sold, almost equal those of the previous year, despite the fact that the average selling price of flowers in rubles was 30% higher than in 2014. The Russian consumer had to pay considerably more for his flowers, and that while auction prices for our products are actually considerably lower than the previous year. So in short, the crisis doesn’t seem to deter the Russians from spending money on flowers."
"The depreciation of the ruble by about 40% compared to February last year, has ensured that Russian consumers opted for cheaper segment flowers. The importer confirms this trend, having imported more of the latter this year.
Because of these lagging auction prices, Dutch flowers were expensive, prompting importers to seek lower priced alternatives. The Chrysanthemum suffered as a result, recording a decrease of about 25%. The selling price of chrysanthemums in rubles was approximately 30% higher than in 2014.
In all, exports were down though sales have been good. Inventories are virtually sold out and white-filled varieties such as Baltica and Zembla in particular did very well. For most importers, chrysanthemums from Holland are still the best quality flowers around, and sales are expected to improve.
