US (PA): Ford City students grow with the flow of hydroponic system

Students at Divine Redeemer School in Ford City can't wait to eat their veggies. That is, once the seeds they planted in a hydroponic setup in a school hallway have a chance to grow.

Fifth-graders in Danielle Kephart's classroom on Friday learned about growing food by using a hydroponic system invented by Norman “Hooker” Brakeman of Williamsfield, Ohio.

“My system is totally self-contained,” Brakeman said. “You can grow a garden indoors or outdoors with water and nutrients. There's no pots and no dirt.”

Brakeman got the idea for his invention about a year ago on learning about how drought and urban sprawl are hurting food production in America.
