US: Poinsettias are subject to taste and fashion

Wayne Brown, a Greenhouse Flouriculture specialist with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food at Vineland Research Centre, said breeders continue to develop new varieties because buyers want different choices.

“We’re selling fashion, we’re selling colour, we’re selling beauty and those are all things that have very personal relationships,” Brown said. “Everyone has a different feel for different colour.”

Brown said there are 50-60 main poinsettia varieties on the market. He has another 45 unnamed selections at the Vineland Research Centre which are being evaluated to see whether or not they are good enough to introduce into the North American commercial marketplace. The same numbered selections are being grown at research centres at North Carolina State University and the University of Florida.
