US (IN): South Bend group adding new greenhouse for veggies
South Bend’s Redevelopment Commission voted Thursday to sell city-owned land to Unity Gardens for $1 for the group’s new, partially underground greenhouse.
The South Bend Tribune reports the panel initially intended to sell the land for $10,000, but decided that Unity Gardens could put the $10,000 to better use as part of its mission to grow fresh produce.
Unity Gardens operates about 50 gardens in South Bend. Its new greenhouse will be mostly underground to take advantage of the Earth’s natural heat-storage ability. The group has two other greenhouses, one that runs on solar power and the other on water power.
