US (CA): Growing business for Christmas poinsettias

Gerardus “Gerry” Warmerdam smokes an old brown tobacco pipe in the nursery he has cultivated flowers in for decades. By November, the greenhouses of the Warmerdam family’s Hollandale Nursery are filled to the brim with poinsettias.

The traditional bright red poinsettias are mixed in with those with leaves sporting unique new colors: white, yellow, and a speckled red-and-white combination.

Each one is wrapped in foil and paper, waiting to take its place as a table centerpiece or church altar decoration.

The Warmerdams supply bedding plants to retail stores, nonprofit organizations and churches. Right now it’s all about the poinsettias, with the family trying to sell off the last of them before Christmas.

“We don’t sell any after Christmas,” said Al Warmerdam, Gerry’s son.
