NZ: A rose by any other name

Tauranga rose breeder Rob Somerfield created the best rose at the Palmerston North trial grounds with a red beauty in memory of those who died in the Canterbury earthquakes.

A red rose that breeder Rob Somerfield hopes will play a part in the Christchurch earthquake memorial has won the New Zealand Rose Society's top award.

The floribunda "Christchurch Remembers" won the Gold Star of the South Pacific at a presentation at Palmerston North's Victoria Esplanade international rose trial grounds yesterday.

"It had to be red," Somerfield said. "There will be a bed of them somewhere in Christchurch, and I hope it will be part of the memorial."

The Tauranga breeder also picked up two certificates for strong growers - a soft pink "Eye Candy", and a tangerine-orange "Hot Topic".
