US: Monsanto's Climate Corp. buys farm data company

The Climate Corp. has acquired 640 Labs, a young firm that focuses on field-level data collection for farmers.

Climate Corp is a division of Creve Coeur-based Monsanto that helps farmers make planting and harvesting decisions through hyper local analysis of weather and soil data.

The Chicago-based 640 Labs was founded by engineers Corbett Kull and Craig Rupp, who use mobile and cloud computing to help growers collect and manage farm information.

Financial details were not disclosed. But San Francisco-based Climate Corp. said 640 Labs will remain in Chicago.

“We’re excited to have a new Chicago location and plan to expand our science and engineering organization, aggressively hiring talent in the region,” said Climate's chief executive, David Friedberg, a company release.
