AU farmers face organic certification challenges

A recent organics industry conference in Western Australia's south west found that a lack of industry auditors, a high cost of inspection and market access issues may be discouraging growers from turning organic.

National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia, (NASAA) visited Bunbury in November and heard organic producers say they aren't getting the attention they deserve from the national body.

NASAA general manager Ben Copeman said he'll 'take a lot more interest' in West Australian growers over the next few years.

He says some of the key issues for WA growers include a lack of accredited organics inspectors in the state.

Mr Copeman said growers also face challenges with the organics supply chain. He said some organic producers rely on access to other organic products to sustain their business.
