US: New rules announced fruit and veg imports

Thursday's edition of the Federal Register contains new rules for importing fruits and vegetables, speculative position limits for trading agricultural commodities, and changes to the gainful employment regulations.

Here's what is happening:

Fruits and vegetables: The U.S. Department of Agriculture is delaying new rules for certain imports of fruits and vegetables.

The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service proposed loosening the import restrictions in September, but announced Wednesday it is reopening the comment period to give the public more time to discuss the rule with the agency.

The agency enforces the rules to make sure harmful pests are not imported into the country through these fruits and vegetables, but is proposing new standards that it says will be "more flexible."

The public has until Jan. 9, 2015 to comment.
