US (NY): More than plants at Opportunities Unlimited greenhouse

Niagara Floral Center and Greenhouse is overflowing with Christmas greenery. Potted plants, wreaths and trees pack the work tables, ready to be delivered to customers in time for the holidays.

What makes this greenhouse different from others is that all of the items were nurtured and created by individuals with developmental or physical disabilities, through Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara's horticulture therapy program.

Greenhouse coordinator Bob Bracikowski, who is a certified horticulture therapist, oversees the operation — and what an operation it is. Most of the plants are grown from seeds or cuttings. In fact, geraniums that will be sold next spring are already growing in one section of the greenhouse, while Christmas wreaths and trees are being assembled in another.
