Ricardo Martinez, Asesores en Invernaderos:

"Mexican grower not used to invest a lot in high tech equipment"

The Mexican greenhouse market is changing into a more medium and high tech market. Growers are looking more at ways to increase the level of technology in the greenhouse instead of making an expansion. That’s what Ricardo Martinez is experiencing in his job as director of Asesores en Invernaderos, a supplier of greenhouse production equipment.

Ricardo is a mechanical engineer and founded the company in 2006 “ At that time I noticed that there were not that many local suppliers in Mexico that supplied the top products for greenhouse production. That’s why I started Asesores en Invernaderos.”

Now Ricardo is working together with well known brands like Berg Hortimotive, Mardenkro, Galuku Substrates, Svensson, Grodan and many more. “We don’t work as a dealer, but as a sales department for these companies here in Mexico. We supply everything that you need for the production in greenhouses. Asesores en Invernaderos is the only Mexican company that offer these brands and their high quality products.”

Although the quality of greenhouse production in Mexico is reaching a higher level, there are still some hurdles on the road. “The Mexican grower isn’t used to invest a lot in high tech equipment,” explains Ricardo. “For example, many Mexican growers consider the normal line of Berg Hortimotive a little expensive, that’s why we are introducing the new line “Benomic Star” in Mexico, which is considerable less expensive than the normal line. This makes it easier for the Mexican grower to adapt.”

Next to supplying products to the greenhouse industry, Asesores en Invernaderos is training their customers on how to use the equipment. “All year long we receive training from our suppliers and of course we try to transfer our knowledge to the customers. On top of this, our suppliers come to Mexico two or three times a year so we can visit the end users together.”

Ricardo sees a healthy future for the greenhouse industry in Mexico. “The medium tech market will increase a lot in the coming years,” he says. “High tech is also going to increase, but more slowly, little by little.” To spread his changes, Ricardo is not only focussing on the greenhouse vegetable production. “We’re looking for some other industries related to greenhouse production, like open field, so we don’t have our entire company focussed on just one thing.”
