US (MA): Hanover students explore hydroponics

What’s in store for the future of food production?
That’s what a team of engineering students at Hanover Middle School are exploring as they work together on a hydroponics project that allows them to discover how to grow plants without soil, using mineral solutions in water.

“Basically the entire project helps us be able to grow different types of plants, vegetables, and herbs without dirt or sun,” eighth-grader Ryan Frank said.
The students are growing things like cucumbers, lettuce, peppers, and basil.

By the end of the holiday season, engineering teacher John Storella-Mullin, who is leading the team, hopes all of the middle school students will be able to eat the food his students are growing.
