Russia: 1.26 million tons of vegetables harvested in Daghestani farms

Latest data say 1,262,900 tons of vegetables have been harvested in Daghestan, a source in Daghestan ministry of agriculture and food supply told RIA "Dagestan". Harvesting is almost finished in the republic. In total, 41,080 hectares have been harvested, which is 480 hectares more than last year.

Vegetable production is a dynamic sector of agriculture in Daghestan supplying local demand in vegetables and exporting a significant volume (500,000-600,000 tons) beyond the republic.

In 2010, greenhouse vegetable production in Daghestan amounted to more than 441 tons, in 2011 - more than 450 tons, in 2012 - 634 tons, and in 2013 - about 764 tons of vegetables. Anyway, the yield was very low and fell short from 15 kg per square meter.

Given the current situation and in order to increase the planted area, yield and gross yield of greenhouse vegetable crops, they’ve developed and adopted a ministry’s target program titled "Developing greenhouse vegeculture in Daghestan in 2013-2015". The program aims at supplying public demand in vegetables regardless of the season. The program is expected to bring greenhouse vegetable production in the republic as high as 7,500 tons in 2015.
