Nepal: Veg prices fall on improved supplies

Improved supplies have pushed down vegetables prices in the wholesale market over the past month.

Prices of popular vegetables like tomato, potato cauliflower, green pea, radish and pumpkin, among others, have come down by around 50 percent.

Officials of the Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Market Development Board (KFVMDB) said surge in supply of seasonal vegetables was the reason behind falling prices. “Supply of vegetables is increasing with each passing day,” Ramesh Dangol, planning officer of the board, told Republica, adding “This is the main harvesting season of vegetables like potato and cauliflower.

As supply of these vegetables has improved, their prices have come down significantly.” According to the board, the Kalimati Vegetables Market is receiving an average of 620 tons per day over the past week.

Tomato prices have come down to Rs 16 per kg compared to Rs 60 per kg recorded a month ago. Similarly, green pea and cauliflower were traded at Rs 17 and Rs 33 per kg, respectively, on Wednesday, down by Rs 21 and Rs 33 per kg. Price of tomato has also come down by Rs 38 per kg to Rs 51, while pumpkin has become cheaper by Rs 14 per kg and was sold at Rs 14 per kg on Wednesday.

Other vegetables like French bean, radish, onion, cabbage, French bean and eggplant have also become cheaper.

Meanwhile, prices of cow pea and mushroom have increased over the past month. Prices of cow pea and mushroom have increased to Rs 58 and Rs 136 per kg, up by Rs 28 and Rs 20 per kg, respectively.
